These are pictures from two weeks ago when Gino and I hiked a mountain. I think most of you saw pics from the hike on Gino's Web site. Well, on our way back home we were looking for another peak. I was navigating and Gino was driving. I took him to this small road in the middle of nowhere. Keep in mind I was supposedly following a map and this was listed as a tourist destination. The road was approaching a dead end and Gino said, "If this is it, I'll eat a bug." So backing out of the dead end I stopped to ask this lady and man if this was the peak. In a really thick incomprehensible Japanese dialect they told me it was the right place. So Gino has to eat a bug now! Even better, we were out in the middle of nowhere on an island, connected to the main land by bridge. They invited us into their very simple home and had us over for dinner. There are no supermarkets, all the food was home grown and caught. The house would be something you'd picture of Japan 100 years ago. The man went out for a couple of minutes and came back wet with just caught abalone and sea cucumber. The lady got out her knife and we had a round of everything raw. Luckily, the second round was cooked. It was so nice to see that side of Japan and see the simple life still existing in corner pockets of first world countries. If you were to buy abalone at a store I hear it costs around $50.00! What a treat! Both the experience and the fare.
